SC and New Music

Just returned from Santa Cruz. Played a great show at Moe’s Alley. My first time up there. What an amazingly gorgeous place. Almost had, no, I did have system overload when I returned to LA.
The body says… “but I thought we were just having a nice slow breakfast.” and the brain says “get back to work!”.
Amazingly good time though. Played with Tess Dunn who is a remarkable young singer. Seriously, check her out, especially live.
She does a great job to raise awareness about CF and while she suffers from it, you’d never know for all the energy and great personality that she brings to stage and life in general.
Back hard at work with Nina Storey. We have some big things coming. Including a huge showcase at Hotel Cafe. Tickets will be available online soon. We play at 8 and we are bringing some heavy new material to the set. I’m very excited.
Also excited to have finished the film score for a new Hilary Duffmovie. I can’t talk about it just yet, but soon soon. Very cool project, very fun, very good people involved.
back to writing and preparing for the show.
love

Critical Praise for Murder Loves Killers Too!
by ryan on 07.30.09 in Uncategorized
Music reviews for Murder Loves Killers Too have been really positive so far… reviews for the movie in general have been great! It’s nice that people have seemed to get the sense of humor and homages to American Slasher classics as well as the Italian Gialli.
My many thanks to Drew Barnhardt for the being eternal encyclopedia of movies and soundtracks. So many great ideas and references that led to creating this score that is a little Harry Manfredini, a little Fancesco De Masi, a little John Williams (i’m referring to 1978’s The Fury, not Indiana Jones), mixed with a little John Carpenter, Goblin, The New York Dolls, Paul Williams and hopefully a fair amount of my own sound to glue it all together.
“The score is a rich and complex piece.” - Jay Slater, The Dark Side Magazine
“a perfectly constructed score that is perhaps one of the most diverse, and high quality soundtracks in low budget filmmaking. The accomplished composer has worked in elements from the Italian giallo films of the 70’s, synth based tracks from the 80’s slasher craze, and overlaid it all with orchestral stabs, sparse piano elements, and even some heavy fuckin’ metal. Sweet.” - Brutal as Hell

“a robust musical score” - Justin Kerswell, Hysteria Lives

“a funkalicious soundtrack” - Horror Talk
“a great score by Ryan Franks which is a mixture of The Texas Chain Saw Massacrein some parts and ’70s exploitation in others, all of which is good.” - Horror Talk

“an aural gift for viewers as the rock music pounds during party scenes and the cell phone ring moves from background noise to forefront in the films soundtrack.” - Michael Ross Allen, 28 Days Later Analysis

“One thing I am certain of, I loved the song used in the closing credits, “Naughty Mittens.” As demented as the movie, it is pretty sweet.” - Movie ‘Tudes
